Teenagers and Self Confidence

Teenagers and self confidence often times do not seem to go hand in hand.  While almost all of use suffer from a lack of self confidence every now and then, it seems to be more visible in teenagers.  Why this is I do not know.  Maybe they are not as in control of their emotions as adults, so we see how they are feeling?  Here are some tips on working with teens and their self confidence.

The main thing to remember is that the easiest way to build their self confidence is to find something they are good at.  Competence in any area of their life leads to a feeling of more self confidence in other areas.

Your approach should be two fold.  One, to increase their confidence, and two, to eliminate things that decrease their self confidence.

Many times people tell teens, “it’ll be okay” and then don’t do anything else.  This is the worst thing to do because it changes nothing.

Also just listening to their problems can help some but it is not enough.  Come up with a concrete plan to help them and put it into action.

Most teens do not know what they are good at because they simply have not tried enough things.  Encourage them to try things, and to keep trying things until they find something they enjoy are are great at.

Teenagers and self confidence are things that need to be nurtured and tended to on a regular basis if you want to see them continue to grow.
