Getting Young Athletes to Feel More Self Confidence
Young Athletes almost always seem to need more self confidence. Sometimes a baseball player in a hitting slump or an injured athlete trying to make a come back need a big boost of it. Here is a simple mind exercise they can to help build their self-confidence back up.
In athletics the difference between winning and loosing can be very small. In fact, often times just a few small changes can make all the difference in who wins and who loses.
Negative self-talk is the main thing that needs to corrected in young athletes. To change this they need to replace that with positive self-talk. Since this does not come naturally, they must force themselves to do this.
Right before bed every night they need to spend at least 5 to 10 minutes thinking of times when they had a great deal of self confidence. This could be from getting a good grade in school, succeeding in a previous sporting event, or anything where they felt good and confident.
Also right before they take the field they should run through some positive memories of when they succeeded in the past. This will help to take some of the nervousness away.
Positive self-talk is something that should be practiced everyday in young athletes. Since the negative self-talk is automatic, you must fight back with positive thoughts.
Share this idea of positively preparing your mind with other young athletes you know. The difference between winning and losing your next game could depend upon it.
